A national imperative

Rebuilding America’s industrial base is essential to ensuring U.S. national security. Since 1990, the U.S. defense industrial base has contracted by two-thirds. Today, rapid expansion is critical to deliver the next generation of submarines, naval ships, aircraft, drones, combat vehicles, air and missile defense systems, and more. Meeting this challenge demands ingenuity, determination, and deep collaboration across the public, private, and higher education sectors.

Reimagining the defense industrial base with big, bold ideas

The U.S. Navy has selected Northeastern to convene leading experts and forge creative public, private, and higher education partnerships. The goal: to harness the nation’s collective ingenuity and resources to ignite novel, scalable approaches to modernizing America’s defense industrial base.

Activating Private Capital to Finance Progress

Deep, dynamic, and disciplined private sector investors and capital markets are a source of great American strength and represent an untapped opportunity to finance the revitalization of the defense industrial base. We will engage leading capital sources—including institutional investors, corporations, philanthropic investors, and family offices—to develop innovative public-private partnerships, which will serve as a “force multiplier” of taxpayer dollars.

Igniting a Societal Call to Action

The defense industrial base depends on the vibrancy of America’s overall industrial base. We need to embrace innovation and share a common resolve to lead the world in production. By deploying the most advanced manufacturing, logistics, supply chain, and infrastructure technologies and developing the most highly skilled and knowledgeable workforce, we will be able to provide for the common defense in the face of state and non-state aggressors.

Standing Up Innovation Task Forces

Northeastern is bringing government and defense industry leaders together with visionary entrepreneurs, financiers, and systems thinkers and doers from across all sectors. Together, they will cut through legacy challenges, identify new solutions, and make out-of-the-box innovations happen.

Launching Agile Rapid Solution Teams

Each year, we will launch leading academic research teams from across the country to evaluate promising ideas to transform the defense industrial base for feasibility and scale. Over six to 12 months, the teams will embrace a participatory process for getting early feedback and sparking timely outreach on findings and recommendations. Validated best practices will become candidates for full activation and roll-out on a national scale.
